What is HMO milk

What is HMO 2’-FL

Among the macronutrients in breast milk, HMO 2′-FL (human milk oligosaccharides) is the third most abundant (8%), more than protein, after only lactose and fat. There are 200 main types of HMOs in human milk. 2’-FL HMO has an important role in the development of children, especially maintaining the health of the intestinal microflora. 2’-FL HMO has a special role to help strengthen the immune system to reduce general infections and respiratory infections which are common in young children. Therefore, scientists have spent many years researching and finding ways to add 2′-FL HMO to infant milk, providing opportunities to boost the immune system for children who cannot afford to breastfeed. mom.

The ratio of HMO in breast milk

HMOs are present in concentrations of 0.35 – 0.88 oz / L. There are about 200 different types of HMOs known in terms of structure. The composition of HMOs in breast milk is individual for each mother and changes during breastfeeding. The oligosaccharides that dominate in 80% of the milk of all women are 2′-fucosyllactose, present in breast milk at a concentration of about 0.088 oz / L.

Benefits of HMOs on a child’s immune system

HMOs offer more immune benefits than prebiotics. HMOs are not just prebiotics (GOS and FOS fiber) that nourish beneficial gut bacteria, but also help prevent pathogens from attaching to cells. Part of the HMO is also absorbed into the bloodstream and produces immune effects outside the digestive tract, which attach to the cell surface and regulate the immune process.

Clinical research shows that children using 2′-FL HMO supplemented formula significantly reduce infections (reduce 66% of respiratory infections and 52% of general infections), 36% Colic symptoms compared to formula without HMO supplements.

Application of HMO to formula

The discoveries about HMO and its benefits have attracted the attention of many scientists and manufacturers in the infant nutrition industry around the world.

Among them is Dr. Rachael Buck, a scientist in the field of immune health and currently leading the pioneering research program on Oligosaccharide in breast milk (HMO). According to her, Oligosaccharides concentration in cow’s milk is very low, so most of the formula milk lines had very little Oligosaccharides. Therefore, she has researched to develop infant formula as close to breast milk as possible.

With the first successful addition of HMO to formula, many brands of milk have been able to bridge the gap between formula and the gold standard of breast milk in nourishing the optimal immune system for children.

One of them is the SMATIE brand – NTR Nutrition Vietnam, which has successfully added HMO nutrients to the most advanced formula milk line today. With more than 15 years of research and clinical trials, this is considered a breakthrough in the last decade, marking a leap in infant nutrition.

Clinical research published in the Journal of Nutrition has shown that infants who use formula (SMATIE) supplemented with 2′-FL HMO have the same amount of prebiotics in their blood and urine as their infants. breastfed with the same growth rate as breastfed babies.

Nutritional ingredients

HMO is a complex, unique, indigestible form of carbohydrate that acts as a prebiotic that nourishes the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is the third most abundant solid component in breast milk (after fat and carbohydrates).

HMO has 3 main roles:

  • They are prebiotics, which are food for beneficial bacteria.

  • Recent studies have shown that HMOs can fight off pathogens. In the absence of HMOs, bacteria attach to cell receptors, which then enter the cell causing infection and disease. In the presence of HMOs, HMOs can act as bait for pathogens to attach instead of cell receptors.

  • HMOs can stimulate immune cells to secrete protective factors. In-depth studies indicate that HMOs help reduce infections like gastrointestinal and respiratory infections in growing children.

    Nutrition products formulated SMATIE HMO

According to François Scheffler, Senior Vice President, Nutrition for Global People and the Asia-Pacific Nutrition and Health Industry, BASF Southeast Asia Group (SMATIE HMO), the development of About HMO research is a breakthrough in improving the nutrition of infant formulas. This will open up new opportunities for promoting the health of children right from infancy and beyond.

And HMO formulas are not only used in infant formula products, and there have been many studies showing that HMOs also help strengthen the resistance for adults and the elderly very effectively.

The first brand SMATIE HMO nutrition product pioneered the application of HMO formulas in infant nutrition products for children, adults and the elderly.
